Jonathan, Symbol Of National Unity – Uzodinma

Nigerian President Jonathan Goodluck considered suspending his country's World Cup team because of its poor play in the soccer tournament.

Chairman of Senate Committee on Aviation, Senator Hope Uzodinma, has said that only a level-headed leader like President Goodluck Jonathan can absorb the provocative plots by high-level groups and individuals determined to destabilise the polity and ignite ethnic warfare in Nigeria.
He urged Nigerians to lend their support to the administration of President Jonathan, who, he described, as a symbol of national unity.
Receiving Igbo victims of terrorists attacks in some  northern states who paid him a courtesy visit at his Omuma country home, Imo State at the weekend, Uzodinma  observed that the nation was passing through trying times and required a leader with proven record of tolerance and a large heart to steer the country through the period.
Uzodinma, who represents Imo West Senatorial District at the National Assembly, said that the president had shown strength of character, uncommon wisdom and patriotism in the
face of deliberate acts of violence and provocation aimed at stirring ethnic furry in the country.
Uzodinma said that few leaders could afford to remain calm and dispassionate as President Jonathan has been, in the face of serious provocative plots  to destabilize the country.
He said that contrary to the impression in some quarters that the President is weak in  his response to some national challenges, the perceived weakness is actually the strength of the President because his every action is governed by the rule of law and the constitution, which he swore to protect.
Uzodimma  said that Jonathan  deserves commendation for being a true democrat, who has continued to govern within the ambits of the law.
“This president has refused to bare his fangs. He has refused to use the big stick on anybody. Even in the face of severe provocation, he has insisted on acting in accordance with the law and the constitution and I think that is the type of leader Nigerians need at the moment,” he said.
He described Jonathan as one President, who does not govern with impunity unlike what happens in some states, that are in the forefront of opposition to the president.
“Just last week, we confirmed Justice Zainab Bulkachuwa as the president of the Court of Appeal following President Jonathan’s request to the Senate for same. This is what is called due democratic process.
“ If some state governors had done the same in their states, the National Judicial Council would have no reason to suspend their Chief Judges,” he declared.
The Senator also observed that it was only under the Presidency of Jonathan that the Senate was asked to confirm the appointment of service chiefs, stressing that although that is what the constitution provides, Jonathan was the first president to comply with the relevant provisions of the constitution.
He also referred to the on-going National Conference as another hallmark of Jonathan’s democratic credentials.
“I am convinced that Jonathan is the best Leader Nigeria needs today. He remains the rallying point of National Unity and I urge all Nigerians to give him their total support, ” he said.
