Chairman of the Independent National
Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Attahiru Jega, yesterday said, the
commission is technically prepared to conduct acceptable elections.
He said with the series of reforms and
innovations
introduced by the commission, INEC has remained confident
for a better-organised election in 2015.Jega was speaking when he received the secretary of state for civilian security, democracy and human rights of the United States (US), Sarah Sewall at the commission’s headquarters in Abuja.
The INEC chairman said “we are optimistic that technically INEC will organize a better, fairer and acceptable election come 2015. We have learnt from our past logistic challenges and we will ensure that they don’t affect us” in subsequent elections.
The chairman said with the level of interest on the upcoming governorship elections in Ekiti and Osun states, the commission would not deploy card readers during the two elections.
He then disclosed that the electoral body has been engaging all the stakeholders in the country’s democratic process as part of efforts to ensure a better and acceptable elections come 2015.
The visitor had earlier told the INEC chairman that the US is looking forward to next general elections in Nigeria, even as she commended the commission for the transformation in Nigeria’s electioneering process.
