Kano activities grounded as Alhaji Ado Bayero is buried

 

            







Activities in Kano were yesterday grounded as the remains of late Emir of Kano, Alhaji Ado Bayero were laid to rest at the Gidan Matan Fada royal burial ground, where his predecessors were also interred, in accordance with Islamic rites.

The Emir, who died at the age of 83, was buried around 6:20pm yesterday after prayers were performed. 
The funeral prayer was led by the Chief Imam of Kano, Professor Sani Zharaddeeen, inside the palace premises around 4:45pm. Weekly Trust observed that all major roads within Kano metropolis were overrun by crowds, many slumping from dehydration.  
The burial was attended by Vice President Namadi Sambo, Speaker of the House of Representatives Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, governors of Kano, Kaduna, Jigawa, Gombe, the Sultan of Sokoto Alhaji Mohammad Sa’ad Abubakar, Gen. Muhammadu Buhari, former vice president Atiku Abubakar, National Security Adviser Colonel Sambo Dasuki and many other traditional and religious leaders from all over the country.
The late Emir who was born on July 25th, 1930, to then Emir of Kano, Alhaji Abdullahi Bayero and his wife Hajiya Asiya.
Bayero is survived by 62 children, among them 32 females and 30 males. Eight of the Emir’s sons are District Heads in Kano State.
Bayero began his education in Kano by pursuing Islamic knowledge and later attended the Kano Middle School. Bayero also graduated from the school of Arabic Studies in 1947 and subsequently worked as a clerk for the Bank of British West Africa until 1949 when he joined the Kano Native Authority.
In 1952, the young Bayero attended the Zaria Clerical College and later won a seat to the Northern Regional House of Assembly. He was appointed the head of the Native Authority Police Division from 1957 to 1962 when he became the Ambassador of Nigeria to Senegal, a position held until 1963 when he was appointed the Emir of Kano, succeeding late Muhammadu Inuwa Dan Abbas.
Ado Bayero celebrated his Golden Jubilee in June last year after spending 50 years on the throne. He was the 13th Emir of Kano under the dynasty established by late Sheikh Usman Dan Fodio and the 56th overall ruler of Kano. His Kingdom transformed from a Native Authority to the Custodian of Hausa Culture as well as the Islamic religion. Bayero is believed to have been one of the most powerful Emirs in Nigeria. 
Bayero was also the Chancellor of University of Ibadan until his death on June 6, 2014.
Meanwhile, the name of the District Head of Gwale, Alhaji Sanusi Ado Bayero, the eldest son of the late Emir, former Governor of Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Sanusi Lamido Sanusi and the Wamban Kano, Alhaji Abbas Sanusi are being touted as likely successors.
