Confab: Scrap State Electoral Commissions — Mark Ogbole

A delegate to the on-going national conference from Nasarawa State, Chief Mark Dogara Ogbole has observed that unless the state independent electoral commission is scrapped, achieving a free, fair and credible elections at the states and local government areas in the country would remain a mirage.
In an interview with LEADERSHIP yesterday in Abuja, Chief Ogbole noted that the various state independent electoral commissions are just there to be given directives
by the various state governors.
“If I were in the committee that is going to look into electoral matters at the confab, I would suggest that we should scrap the state Independent Electoral Commissions. This is because the state independent commissions are just there to be given directives by the various governors of the states.
As long as the state independent electoral commissions exist there cannot be free and fair elections at the state and local government levels”, he said.
Chief Ogbole who is a former commissioner in charge of Nasarawa State Electoral Commission also frowned at the manner in which Nigerian politicians conduct electioneering campaigns.
“At the national level, the way politicians go about the conducts of electioneering and campaigns leave much to be desire. Thugs are recruited; boxes are snatched, and so on and so forth.
So you cannot say that our leaders have been genuinely elected to lead. And as long as someone has not been given the genuine mandate of the people, he will do what he wants and not what the people want him to do”.
He warned that until our elections system is made to conform to the electoral system in other developed countries, the country would continue to experience these political problems.
