The Speaker of the State of Osun House of Assembly, Honourable Najeem
Salaam, has said that any attempt to perpetrate violence in the August 9
governorship election in the state would be massively resisted. He
spoke in Ejigbo, his hometown, on Saturday shortly after participating
in the All Progressive Congress (APC) governorship primary election in
his Ejemu, Ward 4, Ejigbo Local Government.
The incumbent governor, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola, unanimously emerged the
candidate of the party through the primary election. Saying that the
exercise was another testimony that the people of the state love Ogbeni
Aregbesola, Salam stressed that it was also an indication that there is
no amount of effort by the opposition that could prevent the people from
exercising their voting rights.
Reacting to the insistence of the opposition PDP to take over
government by all means, he described the insistence as a mere dream,
just as he noted that there is no amount of force, intimidation or
harassment that can take the love the people have for Aregbesola away.
The speaker who also described the comment of the National Chairman of
the PDP, Adamu Mu’azu, that it is a difficult task to unseat Aregbesola
as realistic, said, “whoever wants to come with violence will be
resisted with all the legal capacity that we have.
“Some people are still dreaming that they will take over and I’m sure
that from their slumber, we will wake them up in August 9. “There is no
amount of force, intimidation or harassment that can take the love the
people have for Aregbesola away. “They are busy bodies that do not have
anything to do, other than to spread rumours and lies.
“In a free and fair election, there is nobody to challenge us in Osun,
as we are fully on ground, but we are entertaining a fear because of the
activities of the Minister of State for Police Affairs who hails from
Osun.
“If they can attack a former governor within their party, we must be
careful, as it shows they want power at all cost, even when people don’t
want them”, he said. Salaam then urged the security operatives not to
be partisan, but provide peaceful environment for the people to have
free and fair election.
Also speaking, a member of the Senate, representing Osun West
Senatiorial District, Senator Mudashir Husain, maintained that the party
would ensure that the election is peaceful, free and fair.
In their remarks, some members of the state House of Assembly also said
the Assembly would resist any form of violence that any politician or
individual might want to unleash on the electorate in the forthcoming
gubernatorial election in the state. They opined that the election would
be one man, one vote, as the people of the state have been enlightened
on how to exercising their franchise.
