The resignation of Alhaji Aminu Hammayo as secretary to the Bauchi State Government, announced recently alongside seven commissioners, in order to contest for elective posts in 2015 came as a surprise.
This is because Hammayo had not shown interest in contesting any elective post having been appointed not long ago.
But few weeks to his resignation, a group, Bauchi Association for political Stability, pasted his posters and urged him to come out and contest.
Chairman of the group behind the posters, Haruna S. Noma, said it is supporting Hammayo because he is a progressive whose vision will salvage the people from the shackles of want and disease, and expressed confidence in the ability of Hammayo to transform Bauchi State to an enviable position.
Hammayo, it is believed, resigned to contest the Bauchi gubernatorial seat as Governor Yuguda’s anointed candidate.
With the coming of Hammayo, the number of gubernatorial aspirants from Misau comes to four as the former minister of state for health, Professor Ali Pate, Ibrahim Makama and Ahmed Ibrahim Dandija are all from the place.
Before Hammayo came into the picture, many saw Pate as Yuguda’s anointed candidate. Yuguda and Pate hold the traditional titles of Dan’isan Misau and Cigarin Misau from the same town.
The signal this time is that the PDP gubernatorial candidate may likely come from Bauchi Central or Bauchi North since Bauchi South has ruled the state for 16 years.
Political analyst, Mohammed Jibril Sogiji, said if Yuguda anoints Hammayo, he may likely clash with the interest of President Goodluck Jonathan and that of the national chairman of the PDP, Alhaji Ahmed Mu’azu.
Deputy Senate Leader Abdul Ahmed Ningi and the minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Senator Bala Mohammed, are also eying the seat and have the resources and external support to contest.
Analysts believe that if Yuguda chooses Hammayo, Mu’azu may likely support another candidate as his former Aide De Camp, Ibrahim Makama , his former SSG, Nadada Umar and former secretary to the Government of the Federation, Mahmud Yayale Ahmed are believed to be interested in the seat.
Even if Yuguda and Muazu agree on a common candidate, many believe it will not be easy for them as there are other strong contenders like the FCT minister who, though has not purchased the forms to run, is seen to likely change his mind.
A day after the resignation of Hammayo, a chieftain of PDP Alhaji Danjuma Adamu Barde, held a press conference and explained that “the minister is still very much in the race.”
A reliable source at the state chapter of PDP said names of Hammayo, Pate, Babayo and former Bauchi State Deputy Governor Senator Babayo Garba Gamawa have been submitted to stakeholders in order to work towards a consensus. There are fears however, that Jonathan may likely throw his weight behind FCT minister as Chief Olusegun Obasanjo did to Yuguda in 2007.
When contacted, Personal Assistant to Mu’azu, Kabiru Ilelah, said the PDP national chairman believes in internal democracy and that he has no anointed candidate.
“He has instructed that whoever wants to contest any position must come through democratic means and must get support from his ward up to state and national level, but he has no anointed candidate,” he stated.
Close political associate of Mu’azu, Alhaji Sani Ahmed Toro, said Mu’azu and Yuguda will support one candidate.
Deputy Chief press secretary to the governor, Mallam Danlami Baban Takko, said Yuguda has no anointed candidate.
A top official of the PDP in the state said they are yet to conclude as to who will be the party’s candidate
