A political pressure group, Albrite Continuity for Jonathan 2015, has advocated for the replacement of Vice President Namadi Sambo with Governor Ibrahim Shema as running mate to President Goodluck Jonathan ahead 2015.
A politician from Katsina State, Hajiya Binta Kuraye, had made a similar plea to the president, urging him not to name his running mate while declaring his intention to re-contest in 2015.
Vice President Sambo supporters have, however, called on the president to disregard such calls, saying the fact that it is coming from Katsina, goes to confirm the suspicion that Shema is interested in replacing Sambo as Jonathan’s running mate in 2015.
Addressing a press conference in Katsina at the weekend, the spokesman north-west zone chapter of the group, Umar Almu, said Shema has performed excellently, adding that one way Jonathan can reward him is to choose him as his running mate.
“We believe with him as your running mate, you stand tall over any other candidate in the election.”
Should Jonathan decide to consider the state governor, Almu said the North would become formidable with good representation and would “be on its way to progress again.”
He said many of the state governors in the North have performed to expectations but that there were some that have performed more than others and advised Jonathan to use performance as a yardstick in choosing his running mate.
“The request to consider Shema is not based on emotions or sentiments, but on an objectively thought out request in the interest of the North and northerners,” he said
